Dear members of the Medford/Somerville and SMFA campus communities,

We are writing with sadness to let you know that Cher Xiong, a second-year student in the School of Arts and Sciences, passed away unexpectedly at Wren Hall late yesterday evening. Their family has been notified.

Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Cher was known as a fearless and adventurous person who was playful, had a wonderful sense of humor, and a warm and welcoming personality. Cher’s sudden passing will be deeply felt by their friends within the Tufts community, at their residence hall, and by everyone whose lives they touched. Our hearts go out to them and to Cher’s immediate and extended family and friends.

Staff from Counseling and Mental Health Services, the University Chaplaincy, and the Dean of Student Affairs Office are currently in Dowling 701 and will be here until 5 p.m. All students are welcome to stop by and connect.

This evening at 6 p.m., we will hold a gathering on the second floor of the Interfaith Center (58 Winthrop Street, Medford) for friends of Cher and anyone who feels impacted by this loss to gather and check in, seek additional information, and support one another.

Counseling and Mental Health Services is providing additional support this week, with counselors available during drop-in hours from noon to 1 p.m. every day and on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Counseling Center.

The University Chaplaincy Office in Goddard Chapel is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and all of the chaplains and advisors can be contacted for pastoral care at 617-627-3427.

Please also know that the full resources of Tufts University support services are available to you. The Division of Student Diversity and Inclusion, the Dean of Student Affairs Office, the Office of Residential Life, and the Advising Deans are all available to support you. If you or someone you know needs more immediate support, please reach out to either the Counselor-on-Call or the Dean-on-Call 24/7 by calling the Tufts 24/7 Help Line at 617-627-3400.

Faculty and staff may contact the Tufts University Chaplaincy as well as the Tufts Employee Assistance Program for support at any time.

We know the whole Tufts community joins us in expressing our deepest condolences to Cher’s family and friends.

Sincerely yours,

Anthony P. Monaco, President
