Dear members of the Tufts community,

I am pleased to announce that this year marks the 13th year of the Tufts Distinction Awards program. Since the awards program started, we have honored over 400 individuals and teams from among our staff and faculty for their exceptional contributions to Tufts. In the process, this unique awards program has become a valued university tradition. I hope that you will help us carry on this tradition of recognition and celebration by submitting nominations for the 2020 Tufts Distinction Awards. Nominations are now open.

The Distinction Awards, sponsored by the President’s Office and Human Resources, celebrate outstanding staff and faculty accomplishments in areas outside of teaching and research. Offering a special opportunity to recognize and encourage teamwork, innovation, and excellent service, they complement the recognition programs in place in many academic and administrative areas. The award program aims to highlight the excellence that our colleagues and friends demonstrate in their work at Tufts.

This year, we are once again including the David J. Kahle Award as part of the Distinction Awards. This award is in honor of David J. Kahle who was our Vice President and Chief Information Officer. Over his 19 years of service at Tufts, David was known as a visionary thinker and innovator whose focus was always on the experience of the end-user and creating value for stakeholders.

We welcome nominations from all parts of the university and from across the full range of our activities and administration, apart from teaching and research. Any Tufts University employee who qualifies for benefits is eligible to win a Distinction Award.

Distinction Awards can go to either individuals or teams. Team nominees may comprise either individuals who work together on a daily basis in a single area or unit, or individuals from different areas who have worked together on a specific long or short-term project.

Any member of the university community may submit a nomination. Full details, an online nomination form, and tips on how to write a winning submission are available on the program website at http://distinctionawards.tufts.edu/. This year’s nomination deadline is Friday, February 7, 2020.

As in past years, winners will be chosen by a selection committee of staff and faculty from across the university. I am grateful to the members of the selection committee for this service to their colleagues.

In March, we will once again hold breakfasts on each campus to celebrate all nominees and nominators, alongside academic and administrative senior leaders and the Selection Committee. Information about these campus breakfasts will be shared with nominees and nominators shortly after the nomination period closes.

Helping to present the Distinction Awards is a highlight of each year for me. This year, the ceremony will take place on the Grafton campus in the Agnes Varis Auditorium on Thursday, June 11, 2020, at 11:00am. You can help make sure we have another great ceremony this year by submitting a nomination for the 2020 Distinction Awards between now and February 7.

Best wishes,

Tony Monaco
