Dear members of the Tufts community,

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Nadeem Karimbux as the next dean of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Currently associate dean of academic affairs and professor of periodontology at the school, Dr. Karimbux will assume the deanship on July 1.

Dr. Karimbux earned his doctor of dental medicine degree from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1991 and his master of medical science and graduate certificate in periodontology from Harvard in 1993. He is a board-certified periodontist with nearly 20 years of practice experience, including service on staff with medical and dental colleagues at Boston Children’s Hospital. At Harvard, he served as director of predoctoral periodontology, program director of the Advanced Graduate Education Program in Periodontology, and assistant dean for dental education. He was recognized with a Distinguished Faculty Award from Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Karimbux joined Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 2012 and has embodied the school’s mission of “education committed to clinical excellence” while leading its academic programs. As associate dean of academic affairs, he has championed curricular reform and teaching excellence, and has shared his talents across the university as co-chair of the University Committee on Teaching and Faculty Development.

Dr. Karimbux has received numerous awards including the G.W. Teuscher Award from the American Society of Dentistry for Children, the Periodontal Educator Award from the American Academy of Periodontology, the Presidential Citation from the American Dental Education Association, and in 2015, the Provost’s Award for Outstanding Teaching and Service at Tufts.

Recognized for his expertise in dental medicine and education, Dr. Karimbux has served on the board of editors for the Journal of Dental Education, as an associate editor for the Journal of Periodontology and MedEdPORTAL, as the online editor for Carranza’s Clinical Periodontology textbook, and as the editor for the Journal of Dental Education. He has published more than 120 papers and presents nationally and internationally.

Dr. Karimbux’s experience and accomplishments are complemented by his dedication to service at the school, university, and professional levels. Admired by both colleagues and students, he is a leader who will enable the School of Dental Medicine to achieve its strategic goals while embodying Tufts’ values of active citizenship and global impact.

We are grateful to Dr. Huw Thomas for his outstanding service and leadership as dean of the School of Dental Medicine during the past eight years. We would also like to acknowledge the search advisory committee for its diligence and thoughtful recommendations.
