Dear Members of the Cummings Community,

As you know, Dean Deborah Kochevar, who is now serving as Tufts’ provost and senior vice president ad interim, has indicated that she will not return to Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine as dean after the end of this academic year. Dr. Joyce Knoll has generously agreed to serve as dean ad interim of Cummings School effective May 21, until a successor is named.

I am pleased to share that Huw Thomas, Dean of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, has agreed to serve as the chair of the Search Committee to advise me on the appointment of the next permanent Dean of Cummings School. He will be joined on the committee by an outstanding group of Cummings faculty, staff, students, and Advisors. I am grateful to all of these individuals for their willingness to undertake this important service for the School and the university. The full membership of the committee is as follows:

  • Huw Thomas (Chair), Dean, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine
  • Ana Alvarado, Senior Director of Development and Alumni Relations
  • Elizabeth Byrnes, Associate Professor and Associate Chair of Biomedical Sciences
  • Katie Dolan, Cummings Board of Advisors
  • Jean Hoffman, Cummings Board of Advisors
  • Cheryl London, Professor of Clinical Sciences
  • Joe McManus, Executive Administrative Dean
  • India Napier, V20
  • Nick Robinson, Associate Professor and Acting Chair of Biomedical Sciences
  • Leslie Sharkey, Professor and Chair of Clinical Sciences
  • Patrick Skelly, Professor of Infectious Disease and Global Health
  • Flo Tseng, Associate Professor of Infectious Disease and Global Health
  • Eugene White, Associate Professor of Environmental and Population Health
  • Sarah Wilson, V21

The search for the new dean will launch shortly, and we anticipate that it will last between six to nine months. The search will be assisted by the executive search firm of Isaacson Miller, which knows the university well. Extensive outreach to potential candidates will be conducted early in the search to ensure the widest applicant pool possible. We anticipate that this phase will last approximately three months. Early in the fall semester, we expect to begin screening candidates and conducting interviews. I have asked the committee to present me with a short list of finalist candidates, any one of whom the committee believes would excel as dean of the school. I hope to name the next dean late in the fall semester or early in the spring 2019 semester.

Input from the school community will be critical to the success of the search. We will shortly be announcing plans for one or more listening sessions on campus. Additionally, I would encourage you to share your thoughts or concerns with the Search Committee. To facilitate this, we will also be announcing a dedicated email address for use in sharing opinions with the committee. I have asked the committee to keep its process, and any information about candidates, in strict confidence.

This is a critical appointment for the future of Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. I want to thank Dean Thomas and the Search Committee for their commitment to advancing the School and its important mission, and I welcome any comments, questions, or concerns regarding the search.

Best wishes,

Tony Monaco
