Dear Members of the Tufts Community,

Tufts’ policies on sexual misconduct have been the focus of extensive public attention during the past several weeks. I want to reaffirm for all of you—as I did for students on our Medford/Somerville campus last week—that the safety of each member of the Tufts community and Tufts’ ongoing compliance with Title IX continue to be among my highest priorities as president.

As my April 28 message indicated, Tufts has made significant progress on these issues. We are committed to doing still more through the work of the university-wide Task Force on Sexual Misconduct Prevention convened in Fall 2013. This includes implementing the actions outlined in the Voluntary Resolution Agreement signed with the federal Office for Civil Rights and adding two new positions to provide additional educational and support services to our community.

On Thursday of this week I met with Catherine Lhamon, Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights in Washington, D.C. We had a productive conversation which clarified OCR’s concerns with Tufts’ Title IX compliance, and we are now engaged in discussions to address them. At that meeting I officially reaffirmed our commitment to the voluntary agreement and to resolving issues as quickly as possible. We look forward to working collaboratively with OCR to address the terms of the agreement as we continue implementing best practices that meet the needs of our community.

Tufts’ work on this important issue will move ahead throughout the summer, and the Task Force on Sexual Misconduct Prevention will continue to play a central role in these efforts. We will keep the community informed of our ongoing efforts to ensure a campus culture that is safe, respectful and supportive of every individual. Meanwhile, if you have questions about Tufts’ policies and resources regarding Title IX and sexual misconduct, comprehensive information is available at the Office of Equal Opportunity’s website.

Best wishes,

Tony Monaco
