Dear Members of the Tufts Community,

As you know, former Provost and Senior Vice President David Harris is now preparing to assume the presidency of Union College, and Deborah Kochevar, Dean of Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine since 2006, is serving as Tufts’ Provost and Senior Vice President ad interim. We are fortunate to be able to call on Debbie’s demonstrated strengths as an academic leader in this vital role. At Cummings School, Dr. Joyce Knoll has generously agreed to serve as dean ad interim starting May 21. I am grateful to both Debbie and Joyce for stepping into these positions. Since Debbie has indicated she will not return to Cummings School, a search for the School’s next permanent dean is now underway.

I am pleased to share that Bárbara Brizuela, Professor of Education and Academic Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, has agreed to serve as the chair of the Search Committee to advise me on the appointment of the next permanent Provost and Senior Vice President of the University. She will be joined on the committee by an outstanding group of faculty, staff, and students and one member of the Tufts Board of Trustees. I am grateful to all of these individuals for their willingness to undertake this important service for the University. The full membership of the committee appears at the bottom of this message.

The search for our next Provost will launch shortly, and we anticipate that it will last between six to nine months. The search will be assisted by the executive search firm of Isaacson Miller, which knows the university well. I have asked the committee to present me with a short list of finalist candidates, any one of whom the committee believes would excel as Provost. I hope to name the next Provost late in the fall semester or early in the spring 2019 semester.

Input from the university community will be critical to the success of the search. I encourage you to share your thoughts or concerns with the Search Committee by sending an email to provostsearch@tufts.edu or using the comment form on the Provost Search website. The Search Committee will share plans for additional opportunities to offer feedback as they are finalized. You are encouraged to make nominations at any time in the search. I have asked the committee to keep its process, and any information about candidates, in strict confidence.

As Tufts’ Chief Academic Officer, the Provost plays a unique role in advancing our academic mission and strategic vision. I want to thank Professor Brizuela and the Search Committee for their commitment to the University, and I welcome any comments, questions, or concerns regarding the search.

Best wishes,

Tony Monaco
