I am writing to update you on the Tufts Marathon Team and our participation in the 122st Boston Marathon. Now in its sixteenth year, Tufts’ involvement in the Boston Marathon has been a beloved tradition at the university and we are grateful to John Hancock for the opportunity to once again participate in this historic race. For the 2018 marathon, I am happy to report that John Hancock has allotted us 50 bibs for runners representing Tufts.
The 2018 Marathon will be held on Patriots Day, Monday, April 16, 2018. Fundraising continues to be a requirement for Tufts runners, and minimums for this year remain at $1,500 for students and $5,000 for all others. Gifts will support research at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. A distribution system will be used to determine students who will receive bibs, with special preference for those nearing the end of their time at Tufts. With limited space, staff, alumni, parents and friends with high fundraising ambitions will also be given special preference to receive a slot. All interested runners are asked to register here.
In the months leading up to the marathon, Coach Don Megerle will take the helm of the team’s training schedule and provide the expertise and support our runners need, as well as on race day itself. Runners will also receive guidance from veteran staff marathoners, including Senior Vice President for University Advancement Eric Johnson and his colleagues who will help with fundraising coordination.
Those interested in joining the team can participate in training runs and meet with Coach Megerle and dedicated members of the Athletics Department on Wednesday mornings at 7 a.m. and Sunday mornings at 8 a.m. in front of the Steve Tisch Sports and Fitness Center on the Medford/Somerville campus, along with indoor interval training sessions held each Tuesday at 8 a.m. inside the Gantcher Convocation Center.
Any member of the community is welcome to join the team in these runs and the different local races in which members participate. These are great opportunities to get in shape and stay healthy, even if running the marathon itself is not your goal. I have personally participated in many of these runs in the past for my own personal fitness and recreation, and can confirm that they are great fun and tremendously motivating.
