Tufts Marathon Team 2016 Call for Volunteers

January 5, 2016

Dear Members of the Tufts Community:

I am happy to announce that the time has arrived to sign up to volunteer with Tufts at the 2016 Boston Marathon.

As in previous years, the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) has allotted Tufts an exclusive number of volunteer spots on Marathon Monday, April 18, 2016. Volunteering at the Marathon is a great opportunity to participate in this historic Boston tradition. Your service on race day provides all runners, including your fellow Jumbos, with the support they need to finish the 26.2-mile course. This year, our volunteers will once again dedicate their day to supporting activities at hydration stations by providing water and words of encouragement to runners at critical points throughout the race.

All volunteers receive a Boston Marathon volunteer jacket and commemorative pin. In addition, Tufts volunteers receive a Tufts hat so that they are easily identifiable to runners and spectators along the course. For those needing transportation, we will provide buses from the Medford/Somerville campus to volunteer assignments.

From the earliest hours of the day to the last runner to cross the finish line, volunteers are crucial to the success of the Marathon. Each year, Tufts has only a limited number of spots on Marathon Monday; therefore, it is imperative that if you register to volunteer, you are certain that it is a commitment you can honor fully on Monday, April 18, 2016.

To register as a Tufts Volunteer, the BAA requires you to visit their website at http://www.baa.org/races/boston-marathon/event-information/volunteer-information/volunteer-registration.aspx. Veteran volunteers will also receive an email from the BAA, which will contain a Volunteer Loyalty Number that you need to register. Remember Tufts’ volunteer spots are limited, so registering early is the best way to ensure that you are part of the Tufts group on Marathon Monday. If during registration you find that all of the Tufts group spots are filled, you can still sign up as a volunteer with the BAA.

Volunteering is an exciting way to participate firsthand in the excitement and community of the Boston Marathon. As we approach Marathon Monday, all registered volunteers will receive an email from Tufts regarding transportation options to assigned locations.

I look forward to seeing you on Marathon Monday, April 18, 2016! Thank you for supporting our team.

Best wishes,

Tony Monaco

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REGISTRATION

Last day to register is Tuesday, February 9, 2016.*

*NOTE: Tufts historically fills all volunteer spots on the first day of registration. Volunteers who receive a spot on the course will receive an email notification of acceptance on or around March 8, 2016 from the BAA.

Go to:

http://www.baa.org/races/boston-marathon/event-information/volunteer-information/volunteer-registration.aspx

  • Choose: ‘Volunteer Now’
  • Choose: ‘First Time Volunteer’ if you are a new volunteer or ‘Returning Volunteer’ if you are a returning volunteer. Returning Volunteers: You need your Volunteer Loyalty Number and zip code (this information will also be emailed to you by the BAA on January 5, 2016). There is also a Volunteer Loyalty Number look-up on the application.
  • Enter/Update Contact Info
  • Select: ‘Yes’ next to ‘I have been given a group name and a passcode and would like to join a group.’
  • Choose the group you’d like from the drop-down list and enter the corresponding password.

Your choices are:

  • TuftsU Mile 10 (password: runtufts10)
  • TuftsU Mile 11 (password: runtufts11)
  • TuftsU Mile 22 (password: runtufts22)

(Passwords are not case sensitive.)

Follow the prompts to the end. These may include any special instructions and verifying your age and a waiver from the BAA.

*Note: you have not successfully completed the application until you see an on-screen confirmation number. Receipt of a confirmation number is not a guarantee of your volunteer spot. Official notifications and volunteer assignments will be communicated in March by the BAA. Group volunteer members also receive separate correspondence from the BAA and are individually responsible for making sure they are aware of BAA policies and procedures.

*Remember: space is limited. If you do not receive a confirmation number due to all spots being filled and would still like to be considered to volunteer, please contact Meaghan Comerford at marathonvolunteer@tufts.edu.
