Dear Members of the Tufts Community,
We are pleased to share with you that Michael Wagner, MD, FACP, has been named President and Chief Executive Officer of Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children. Dr. Wagner has served as Interim President and CEO since September and has proven himself a strong and capable leader for both institutions. We have included below a message sent from Thomas Hollister, Chair of the Tufts Medical Center Board of Trustees, to Medical Center staff a short time ago.
The Medical Center Board, on which we serve as representatives of the University, voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Wagner to the position, noting that he brings to the role a complex understanding of and deep commitment to patient care, academic medicine, and research.
Dr. Wagner first joined the Tufts family more than 25 years ago. He began his career in Tufts Medical Center’s internal medicine practice and has since served as Chief of General Medicine, Chief of Internal Medicine and Adult Primary Care, Chief Medical Officer, and President and CEO of the Tufts Medical Center Physicians Organization. Dr. Wagner has shared with us his commitment to continuing to partner with all members of the Tufts community — including our faculty, students and staff — to advance patient care and train the next generation of compassionate health care professionals.
Tufts University and especially our Medical School are fortunate to have a strong collaborative relationship with Tufts Medical Center. We know that Dr. Wagner will lead the Medical Center with great skill. Please join us in wishing him well as he assumes his new role.

Dear Medical Center Community,
I am delighted to inform you that the Board of Trustees has unanimously voted to name Michael Wagner, MD, FACP the permanent President and CEO of Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children, effective today. Mike has performed admirably in the Interim CEO role over the past six months, while also serving as President and CEO of the Tufts Medical Center Physicians Organization. He has a proven track record of strong leadership at Tufts MC and in the health care industry nationally. Mike’s vision, experience and expertise make him the ideal choice to successfully guide our Medical Center through the coming changes and challenges of health care reform.
For many of you, Mike requires little introduction. He has been an important part of the fabric of Tufts Medical Center for much of the past 25 years. Mike started his career as a primary care physician in our internal medicine practice, and since has served as our Chief of General Medicine, Chief of Internal Medicine and Adult Primary Care, Chief Medical Officer and President and CEO of the Tufts Medical Center Physicians Organization.
Importantly, as we position Tufts MC for the health care industry’s many changes, Mike holds valuable experience outside of our organization, working in a number of clinical, administrative and executive-level roles at the University of Rochester, Fidelis Care, Cove HealthCare and as CEO of EmCare Inpatient Services, a national hospitalist physician practice management company, where he managed 66 hospitalist programs with 385 physicians in 16 states. Mike is committed to Tufts MC’s academic mission and has a depth of experience with community medicine.
In his time at Tufts MC, Mike has created and implemented numerous and diverse programs to improve quality and operations, enhance patient safety and increase patient engagement at the Medical Center. He also spearheaded the overhaul of the Graduate Medical Education Messprogram, ensuring that our trainees receive the best possible clinical and educational experience. He is deeply committed to Tufts Medical Center’s research mission and has worked closely with the research leadership and community to spearhead funding and reputational growth.
Mike has been playing an instrumental role with Ellen Zane, Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees, in developing the organization’s strategic plan. Mike has asked Ellen to continue her role in this important endeavor and I am pleased to say that she has agreed.
The Tufts MC PO will soon begin the process of identifying Mike’s successor as President and CEO of the PO. Mike will work closely with the leadership of the PO and Chairs of the departments on the PO’s clinical and business operations during this interim period.
Please join me in congratulating Mike and in supporting him as he advances our Medical Center forward. Under his leadership, I am confident that we will succeed and thrive in the new health care landscape and set the bar for high-quality, innovative health care delivery.
