Dear Members of the Tufts Community,
I am writing to invite you to participate in the 118th Boston Marathon as a member of the Tufts Marathon Team. While the memory of the tragic events surrounding last year’s marathon remains, I am equally aware of the resilience shown by the greater Boston community and the wonderful displays of support, courage, and generosity from Tufts students, faculty, alumni, and friends. Tufts’ participation in the Boston Marathon is a beloved tradition at the university and I am glad that our runners will once again tackle the 26.2-mile course with an enduring sense of Jumbo pride.
This year’s marathon will be held on Patriot’s Day, Monday, April 21, 2014. Tufts’ team will once again include a total of 100 runners, including students, alumni, staff, parents, and friends. The fundraising minimums for participating this year remain at $1,500 for students and $5,000 for all others. Last year the team raised more than $500,000 in support of research on nutrition, obesity, hunger, and famine and to sustain health and wellness programs across the university.
As in years past, Coach Don Megerle will take the helm of the team’s training schedule and provide the expertise and support our runners need in the months leading up to the marathon, as well as on race day itself. Runners will also receive nutrition guidance from Professor Miriam Nelson of the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, while Vice President for University Advancement Eric Johnson and his colleagues will help with fundraising advice and coordination.
Those interested in joining the team can participate in training runs and meet with Coach Megerle and dedicated members of the Athletics Department on Wednesday mornings at 7 a.m. and Sunday mornings at 8 a.m. in front of the Steve Tisch Sports and Fitness Center on the Medford/Somerville campus.
Any member of the community is free to join the team in these runs and the different local races in which members participate. These are great opportunities to get in shape and stay healthy, even if running the marathon itself is not for you. In the past, I have participated in these activities and can confirm that the excitement is infectious. I encourage you to take advantage of this chance to work with Coach Megerle and the team throughout the year.
