Dear Members of the Tufts Community,
Over the last three years, more than 3,600 members of our university community have participated in the Trek to Talloires, logging a remarkable total of 180,000 hours of physical activity and exercise. Trekkers have kept the winter doldrums at bay, made new friends, and improved their health by participating in this annual personal wellness challenge. I hope you will become one of them this year.
Launched in partnership by Athletics and Human Resources in 2010, the Trek takes participants on a 100-day virtual journey from our Medford/Somerville campus to the Tufts European Center in Talloires, France. The 2013 Trek begins today and runs until midnight on April 12. You can join at any time before then by signing up online at www.trek2talloires.org.
The Trek is not about exercise narrowly defined: any physical activity counts, from walking or running to yoga. Once you have signed up, you set your own goals and start logging your fitness hours. Your route on the virtual tour is determined by the goal you set. The more hours of activity you commit to, the more stops you will make along the way. If you cannot commit to as many hours, you take a more direct route. Participants are eligible for prize raffles over the course of the 100 days the Trek is on, but the real prize will be in your enhanced health and sense of wellbeing.
As a university, we are known around the world for our commitment to health, nutrition, and wellness. The Trek is just one of the many ways we continue to put that commitment to work within our own academic community. Those of you on the Medford/Somerville campus may choose to log your Trek hours in the spectacular new Steve Tisch Sports and Fitness Center opened last fall. And enhanced wellness programming will be rolled out for staff and faculty later in the semester.
The Trek is open to all members of the Tufts community, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, and friends. I encourage you and your friends and family to log onto www.trek2talloires.org to learn more. Last year’s Trek gave me personally great motivation to stay active over the course of the winter, and I am looking forward to participating once again. I hope you will join me and the other Trekkers this year.
