Tufts VotesOctober 10, 2008 Dear Tufts Students: One of the first responsibilities of an active citizen is to vote. At Matriculation earlier this year, I told the members of the entering Class of 2012 that their first Tufts homework assignment was to vote on November 4 if they were eligible to do so. I hope our freshmen will set a positive example for all of you. Registration deadlines vary between states, but registration remains open in Massachusetts until next Wednesday, October 15, so there is still time to register here. If you are already registered elsewhere and will not be home on Election Day, you will need to request an absentee ballot before your state's deadline. Tufts has made it easy for you to register, or to request an absentee ballot. All you have to do is to go to the Tufts Votes section of the Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service website: http://activecitizen.tufts.edu/ I am grateful to the many Tufts students who are participating in voter-registration efforts. Elections matter. Many of your contemporaries will not enjoy the luxury of spending Election Day on a college campus; instead, they will be serving this country in uniform in places like Afghanistan and Iraq. You honor their service by participating in this most important obligation of citizenship. This is not a partisan appeal. I hope all of you will vote, whatever your political views or party affiliation. I am tremendously proud of our students’ dedication to the public good. Voting is a crucial way for you to express that commitment. Best regards, Larry Bacow |
