The September 11 Tragedies

Date: September 17, 2001

Dear Colleagues,

Last Friday evening I sent the following letter to the student body. I would like you to see it as well. We are all trying to help support our students and each other. At this time, we have to be especially sensitive to the sense of isolation felt by some of our Arab, Muslim and international students. Please try to reach out to them. Thank you all for your help through this extraordinary period in our history.

Dear Friends,

The events of the past week weigh heavily on us all. The pictures and stories that are now starting to emerge -- of those who survived and those who did not -- are simultaneously gripping, disturbing, and incomprehensible. All of our lives have been touched. Life in this country will never be the same.

During this past week I have also witnessed Tufts come together as a community. We have shared our anxiety and fears, and talked openly about topics that we often avoid -- for example, the fragility of life. I hope this sense of closeness will not slip away.

I wish that every member of our community felt equally embraced, but I fear this is not the case. I have heard reports that some of our Muslim, Arab, and international students have been subject to unkind remarks or worse. We cannot tolerate this behavior. I hope if you witness it, you will speak up and express your disapproval. We must reach out to everyone, and not allow anyone to be isolated during a time when each of us feels fragile and vulnerable.

There are many offices at Tufts that are available to help any student in need of support. Please feel free to contact the Dean of Students, the Chaplains, Counseling Services, the Diversity Office, or the Police.

I hope you will find an opportunity for contemplation and reflection over the weekend. I think we are all glad to see this week draw to a close.

Best regards,
Larry Bacow
