Naked Quad RunTo: Tufts Students Dear Students, Last night I had my first close encounter with the Naked Quad Run. (Last year, I was away from campus when the run took place.) I was sorely disappointed by what I saw and heard. Today's police reports describe acute alcohol poisoning, at least one fracture, a shoulder dislocation, and cuts and abrasions. Fortunately, the only lasting injuries appear to be to some students' egos. The campus this morning was littered with beer cans and broken bottles. West Hall this morning was an embarrassment for all members of this community. The combination of consumption of alcohol with a mad dash through an icy, hilly campus at night cannot continue. I also heard reports of students being groped while running, and other examples of poor and disrespectful behavior. Tufts is better than this. I realize that not everyone is responsible for what occurred yesterday, but it reflects on all of us. Last night Adele and I hosted a dinner to honor some of the University's most generous donors. I spoke with pride about you, our students -- about your accomplishments in the classroom, on stage and on the playing fields. I spoke about your many talents, your volunteer work and your numerous contributions to local schools, the elderly, foster children, and other good causes. In short, you are far better than what was on display last night. I have higher expectations for you, and candidly, hope that you have higher expectations for yourself. I will talk with the Deans, faculty and student leaders on campus about how to move forward. Let's work together to make changes so that what happened last night is not repeated in the future. Good luck with exams and have a restful and restorative holiday break. If I don't see you before vacation, I look forward to seeing you when you return in January. Sincerely, |
