The 2003 Issam M. Fares Lecture

February 25, 2003

Dear Members of the Tufts Community,

On Wednesday afternoon former President George H.W. Bush will deliver the 2003 Fares Lecture. This lecture brings world leaders to Tufts to address issues concerning the Middle East. Not everyone on our campus is pleased that President Bush will be speaking. Some who oppose US involvement in a possible war with Iraq are planning a protest outside the Gantcher Center prior to the lecture. As I have said many times before, great universities must embrace diversity in every possible dimension, including diversity of thought. As a community, we do not speak with one voice. No one will be stopped from peacefully demonstrating outside of Gantcher provided access to the facility is not restricted.

At Tufts we respect the right of freedom of expression. This right also extends to invited guests including former Presidents of the United States. Over four thousand people will gather in Gantcher to hear former President Bush. All students who requested tickets were accommodated. I hope that those planning to attend the lecture will show respect both for President Bush and all those who wish to hear what he has to say.

At 8PM in Asean Auditorium in Cabot there will be an open discussion of President Bush's speech for members of the Tufts community. This discussion will be moderated by University Chaplain David O'Leary. It will provide an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to participate in a spirited but civil dialogue on issues raised by President Bush during his lecture.

We are expecting a full auditorium for the Fares Lecture. For the safety of all guests, those attending must remain seated during the lecture and keep the aisles clear. Please remember to bring your Tufts ID and your ticket for admission. Metal detectors will be used at the entry doors. Handbags will be allowed but are subject to search. Please do not bring any backpacks, briefcases, containers, cameras, or signs. They will not be allowed into the Gantcher Center.

One measure of a community is how it deals with difficult issues. I have been proud to date of the civility and respect we have shown each other in our discussions over US policy in the Middle East. I am confident that we will continue this tradition tomorrow. Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,
Lawrence S. Bacow
President
