Tufts Mourns the Loss of John Dowling

To: Tufts Community
From: President Lawrence S. Bacow
Date: May 6, 2004

Dear Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you of the passing of Trustee John Dowling, Class of '59. John died earlier this week at the age of 66 after a courageous battle with cancer. While a number of our students and faculty had the opportunity to get to know John personally, he truly influenced the life of almost everyone who studies or works at Tufts. John was a passionate advocate for the interests of students. Dowling Hall would not exist today but for his efforts. He was more than just a generous contributor to his alma mater. He also deeply understood the need for Tufts to better serve its student population through coordinated administrative efforts. He was central to the effort to redesign our undergraduate student services, and it was his generosity that ultimately made it possible for Dowling Hall to be built. All who work there and all who benefit from the activities that are housed within it have John Dowling to thank.

John also was instrumental as an advisor to Tufts on all of our real estate projects. He helped to address design and permitting issues for the music building, Sophia Gordon Hall and developments in downtown Boston.

John was a large man who expressed his opinions passionately. He loved his family, the Catholic Church, his community, and his alma mater. He was a loyal friend to all, and he will be missed. Out of respect for John and his family, we have lowered flags on campus until after his funeral on Monday. This university and all of us have lost a great friend.

Sincerely,
Lawrence S. Bacow
President
