Message from President Bacow

March 29, 2004

Dear Friends,

Welcome back from spring break. The campus was quiet this past week. I hope students got some well-needed rest, and faculty and staff also enjoyed a more relaxed week as we all prepare for the mad rush of the end of the term.

Unfortunately, I spent a portion of my spring break as a guest of Tufts-New England Medical Center. I have a virus that has settled in the lining that surrounds my heart. The condition is called pericarditis and it has left me temporarily with an irregular heartbeat, a not uncommon side effect of this condition. Although I am not in any pain, I am very tired because my heart is not pumping efficiently. My doctors have assured me that once the virus has cleared up and my heart returns to a normal rhythm, I will be fine. Pericarditis does not cause any long-term damage. The prescribed treatment is lots of rest. Consequently I must suspend my normal schedule for the next few weeks.

I am getting terrific care from a great team of Tufts doctors. I am also fortunate to be surrounded by a great group of colleagues who I have asked to stand in for me until I regain my strength. Thus, you are likely to see a lot more of our Provost, the Deans, and the Vice Presidents at events where I otherwise might have participated.

Some of you may be wondering if my condition is related to my training for the marathon or the intensity of my normal work schedule. My doctors have assured me it is not. If anything, my recovery is likely to be helped by the fact that I am in excellent shape as a result of my marathon training. Unfortunately, I will not be able to run the race this year. I expect to be cheering on the Tufts team on Patriot's Day along with many of you.

In order to catch up on my rest, I am trying to limit my email and phone calls, so let me thank you in advance for your good wishes and support.

Best regards,
Larry Bacow
