Message from President Bacow

May 3, 2005

To the Tufts Community:

Many of you have read in the Daily that a student who is active within the Tufts Arab Student Association reported that he was physically assaulted by three members of our community this weekend near the intersection of Professors' Row and Curtis Street. The student reports that his assailants shouted anti-Arab slurs at him both before and during the altercation.

Fortunately the student will recover from his injuries. However, events like this also wound our entire community. There is no place at Tufts for such behavior. We must continue to work together to create a tolerant campus, one that celebrates our collective diversity. No one should be called out because they might appear different to some.

Please be assured that our Dean of Students Office and our Public Safety Office are investigating this incident, and will take appropriate action after they have finished gathering all the facts.

I deeply regret what happened. We must continue our work to ensure that all on our campus feel welcome and respected.

Sincerely,
Lawrence S. Bacow
