Delta Dental Gift Announcement

May 5, 2006

Dear Colleagues:

I am delighted to announce that Delta Dental of Massachusetts has awarded $5 million to the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Please join me and Dean Lonnie Norris, DMD, MPH, in celebrating not only the largest gift in the School's history but also how these funds will be used to benefit underserved people. This gift supports teaching, research, leadership and clinical services for people in need.

Many people in the Tufts community do not know the breadth and depth of the Dental School's commitment to public health and community service in both philosophy and practice, particularly under Dean Norris's leadership.

One longstanding program is the Tufts Dental Facilities for Persons with Special Needs, established in 1976 and headquartered at the Fernald School. Its eight clinics, operated through a contract with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, serve more than 15,000 patients with mild to severe disabilities each year. The Dental School's community outreach and public service work also include extensive work with people with HIV/AIDS and survivors of domestic violence, preventative care for students at area schools, and humanitarian missions.

While most of us know the wrenching pain of a toothache, few of us can imagine what it might be like to be unable to brush or floss our teeth, or to not have access to adequate dental care. Low-income and minority populations, including individuals with disabilities, victims of violence, and those who are elderly or homeless, are less likely to have access to adequate dental care and are at high-risk for dental and oral diseases that, in turn, create additional health problems.

This generous gift from Delta Dental will be used to endow a chair in public health and community service, improve care and access to dental care for persons with special needs and other underserved populations, and expand Tufts’use of a clinical database to create best practices for dental treatment guidelines for persons with special needs.

Delta Dental of Massachusetts is the largest provider of dental benefits in the state. Kathleen O'Loughlin, DMD, president and CEO of Delta Dental, is a 1981 graduate of Tufts Dental School and is also the co-chair of the alumni reunion taking place this weekend. We are grateful for Dr. O'Loughlin's and Delta Dental's support of our shared vision to address health disparities.

This gift honors the Dental School's deep commitment to active citizenship and public health, and pays tribute to the entire Dental School community serving those in need.

Sincerely,
Lawrence S. Bacow
President
