Update on Tufts' Emergency Alert System

November 7, 2007

Dear Members of the Tufts Community:

I am writing to let you know that we will conduct a live test of Tufts' new emergency alert system next Wednesday, November 14. We will send test messages to all the cell phone numbers, email addresses, and landlines that members of the community have registered in the system. We expect to issue more than 40,000 alert messages in total.

Next week's test will allow us to measure the effectiveness of the system. We will be tracking the completeness and timeliness of message delivery as well as looking for any unanticipated problems. We will share the results of the test with the community.

If you have not already added your emergency contact information into the system, please take a minute to do so. You can access the Send Word Now system via the email you received on October 30. If you need an additional invite email or have questions about your existing contact information, please email uitsc@tufts.edu. The deadline to submit your information in time for the test is midnight on Friday, November 9.

Our new alert system is a powerful tool, but we cannot rely on technology alone to meet a crisis situation. In the event of an emergency, we will all still have the responsibility to help each other. It will take some time for messages to reach every person in the system. When you get an alert, follow the directions and spread the word.

I am proud of the university-wide effort that has gone into implementing our new emergency alert system. Please do your part by registering for Send Word Now if you have not already done so. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Lawrence S. Bacow
President
